Nusa Lembongan is the perfect island get away for those who just want to kick back and relax but it’s also home to some amazing sights and places of stunning natural beauty which it would be a shame to miss during your stay. Here are our top picks of things to see while you are on the island.

Beautiful reefs, marine life and manta raysManta Ray Nusa Lembongan

If you are looking for some more adventurous sight-seeing then take a look beneath the waves and you’ll find an underwater world packed with colour and bursting with life. Whether you want to enjoy a leisurely snorkel, try scuba diving for the first time or take a diving day trip (certified divers) we can help to arrange this for you. You’ll see vibrant reefs that are teeming with fish and of course, the majestic manta rays for which these islands are so famous.

Mangroves meeting the ocean

The northern tip of Nusa Lembongan is home to an area of stunning natural mangrove forest. The finger like roots
of the mangroves and their dense leafy canopies make these a unique species of tree. Mangrove forests are also hatching and breeding grounds for many of the reef species that you will see when diving or snorkelling around the island. It’s also an area that’s popular with lizards and many species of birds. Small local boats can be hired and you’ll be punted through the natural channels which meander through the forest. Take time to enjoy the silence which is only interrupted by the lapping of water and occasional bird calls.

Devils’s Tear

Devil's Tear Nusa LembonganThis natural rocky cliff edge can be a either a lion (as the name suggests) or a gentle kitten depending on the tides and the swell. On quiet days you’ll look out over the bright blue ocean which stretches as far as the eye can see. Looking over you’ll see the incredible rock pools formed by the waves and water. On days when the swell is big, stand back and take in the force of nature as the waves beat the rocks and splash up metres at a time. Sunsets here are also stunning.

Temples on Nusa Lembongan

Temples are pinnacle to the day to day life of the island and you’ll see them everywhere you look. Each family compound has their own small temple of shrine and then there are larger village temples made up of several areas. The word for “temple” in Balinese is “Pura” and the larger village temples are called “Pura Desar”. The temples are ornate and some have intricately carved wooden doors which are “guarded” by monstrous looking statues. For those that are interested in photography a trip to a temple is a must.

Ceremonies

Balinese ceremonies-minThe people of Nusa Lembongan have frequent ceremonies throughout the year to mark events such as births, religious days, deaths, full moons, new moons, blessings and even tooth filing! You’ll see the villagers wearing their traditional dress, baskets of fruits being carried on the ladies head, traditional gamelan music being played by the band, processions and quiet moments of contemplation.

Seaweed farming in Ceningan ChannelSeaweedFarmingLembongan

At low tide you won’t see any boats in Ceningan Channel but what you will see is the seaweed farmers hard at work during the narrow window of time they have before the tide turns. They plant and harvest the seaweed with such efficiency that it looks easy but the laden baskets they carry are extremely heavy. Seaweed farming was Nusa Lembongan’s first real industry and it’s a fascinating process.

Stunning Sunsets

Sunsets Nusa LembonganIf you like a good sun-downer then Nusa Lembongan is definitely the right island for you. Once you have experienced one Nusa Lembongan sunrise you won’t be able to get enough of them.

The waves roll in as if in slow motion in the distance, you can see the village of Jungut Batu below, trace the beach along the coast and see over the mangrove forests in the north. A great place to see the lay of the land, take photographs and enjoy a cold beer!
